The Ostbahn is getting fit for the future: the line between Graz Ostbahnhof and the Hungarian state border (Mogersdorf) is being converted for operation using electricity. This will allow trains to travel more environmentally friendly, faster and more frequently.

Several million litres of diesel and thousands of tonnes of CO2 can be saved on the 80 km long route every year. In addition, the switch to electric operation will bring numerous benefits for passengers.

In the coming years, the focus will be on planning and official procedures. The main work is planned from 2026 to 2028. In addition to the power supply and work on the railway crossings, this also includes modifications to technical facilities and transport stations. One particular challenge is the only tunnel along the route - the Laßnitztunnel. In order to bring the 530 metre long Laßnitztunnel in the Laßnitzhöhe area up to date, the cross-section has to be widened. This is the only way to create space for the technical facilities required for safe and modern railway operations.
